What’s Worth Storing in a Climate-Controlled Unit?

πŸͺ‘Β  Furniture β€” especially anything wooden

Wood is the main one. A dresser, dining table, bed frame, or antique piece that goes into a hot, humid unit for six months doesn’t come out the same. Joints loosen, drawers stick, finishes lift. Climate control keeps the wood at a stable moisture level so none of that happens. Upholstered pieces benefit too β€” fabric that sits in a humid unit can develop a smell that doesn’t wash out.

Β

πŸ’»Β  Electronics β€” especially anything with a screen or battery

Heat is hard on the adhesives inside screens and the cells inside batteries. Humidity corrodes the metal contacts on circuit boards. A television, laptop, gaming system, or set of speakers that sits in an unregulated Knoxville storage unit over summer may work β€” or may not. Climate control removes the uncertainty.

Β

πŸ“„Β  Documents β€” especially anything irreplaceable

Paper is more vulnerable than it looks. Heat and humidity accelerate yellowing, brittleness, and ink fade over years of storage. For anything you’d have a hard time replacing β€” contracts, deeds, financial records, medical files, old correspondence β€” a climate-controlled unit isn’t a luxury, it’s the sensible choice.

Β

πŸ“·Β  Photos and film β€” anything you can’t rescan or reprint

This is the one people regret when they skip climate control. Photo prints and film negatives are extremely sensitive to temperature cycling. Color shifts and emulsion damage are permanent β€” there’s no restoring them after the fact. If you have irreplaceable family photos going into storage, this upgrade is worth every dollar.

Β

🎸  Musical instruments

Guitars, violins, brass instruments, and woodwinds are built to precise tolerances. Wood that swells and contracts with the seasons works against those tolerances β€” cracked bodies, misaligned necks, stuck keys. Players who store instruments seasonally know this. Climate control keeps them playable and in tune.

Β

πŸ‘”Β  Clothing and fabric β€” especially long-term storage

A few weeks in a standard unit is usually fine. A few months in Knoxville humidity is not β€” fabric develops mildew and a persistent smell that’s hard to remove even with washing. For winter clothes going away for the season, wedding dresses, vintage pieces, or anything fabric you’re storing longer-term, climate control is the right call.

Β

🏺  Antiques, art, and collectibles

These items are worth money or sentiment, and condition is what determines both. Climate-controlled storage is standard practice for antique dealers, collectors, and anyone moving a home full of items they’ve spent years accumulating. It’s the simplest way to make sure what comes out of storage is still worth what went in.

Β

πŸ“¦Β  Business inventory and records

We have contractors, small retailers, pharmaceutical reps, and professional service businesses storing with us. Climate control matters when your inventory has a shelf life that heat can shorten, when your documents need to remain legally intact, or when product condition affects what you can sell.

What can’t go in any unit: fuel, perishable food, firearms, hazardous or toxic materials β€” regardless of whether it’s climate-controlled. If you’re unsure about something specific, call us before you load up the truck: (865) 687-3600.

Your Questions About Climate-Controlled Storage, Answered

Q: What is climate-controlled storage?

A: A storage unit inside a temperature-regulated building that stays consistent year-round. At StoreSafe, our climate-controlled units are accessed through interior hallways at both our Maynardville Pike and Primus Road locations. Call (865) 687-3600 to find out if climate control is right for what you’re storing.

Q:Β  Do I actually need climate control, or is it just an upsell?

A:Β  It depends entirely on what you’re storing. If it’s garden equipment, camping gear, or boxes of things you wouldn’t mind getting a bit worse for wear β€” standard storage is probably fine. If it’s furniture, electronics, documents, photos, instruments, clothing, or anything irreplaceable β€” climate control is worth it. We’ll tell you honestly when you call or come in.

Q:Β  What temperature range do your climate-controlled units stay at?

A: We keep our climate controlled units set between 64 and 74 year around.Β  We check temperatures and humidity in buildings 5 – 6 days a week. If you have a very specific temperature requirement, call us at (865) 687-3600 and we can discuss what’s available.

Q:Β  Can I still get drive-up access with a climate-controlled unit?

A:Β  Our climate-controlled units are in enclosed buildings with interior hallway access β€” which is standard for this type of storage. It’s actually an advantage: when you load or unload, your items aren’t exposed to outside air, rain, or direct sun.

Q:Β  How long can I rent a climate-controlled unit?

A:Β  As long as you need β€” all our storage rentals are month-to-month with no long-term contracts. Rent for two months during a home renovation or several years while a family member is working away. There are no penalties for leaving and no pressure to commit.

Q:Β  Do you have climate-controlled units at both Knoxville locations?

A:Β  Yes β€” at both our Maynardville Pike location (North Knoxville, Halls/Fountain City area) and our Primus Road location (Northwest Knoxville, Powell/Norwood area). Availability by size varies, so call (865) 687-3600 to check what’s currently open at whichever location works best for you.

Q:Β  Anything I should know before I move things in?

A:Β  Make sure everything goes in dry β€” moisture sealed inside boxes or fabric will stay there regardless of climate control. Get items off the floor if you can, leave a little space for air to move around large pieces, and put the things you’re most likely to need access to near the front. Come by or call if you’d like any other advice before move-in.
